Ashford CC vs Frimley Green Cricket Club - Sunday 17th May 2026, 13:00

Ashford CC (250/5) beat Frimley Green Cricket Club (246/8) by 5 wickets

Match Detail
We won the toss and chose to bat first. Things began… let’s say politely, with a slow start and an early wicket at just 12 runs. The next pair injected some life into the innings, but we lost our second wicket in the seventh over at 38. Two more wickets followed in quick succession—when we were at 60 and 61 runs in the 11th and 12th overs respectively—clearly our batsmen were in a generous mood. Then came Swaroop and Hafiz, who finally steadied the ship. Their partnership carried us to the 25th over before Hafiz fell, and Swaroop followed four runs later. At 140-6, the dressing room mood was somewhere between “we can recover” and “who upset the cricket gods today”. The seventh and eighth batsmen didn’t stick around long either, leaving us at 166-8 after 30 overs. At that point, even 200 looked like a distant dream—more fantasy than target. Enter Captain Manoj Bhati, cape fluttering in the breeze, and his partner Ritesh, who played the perfect supporting role. Together, they batted right till the final ball of the 40th over, adding a heroic 78-run partnership. Thanks to them, we finished at a very respectable 246-8—a total we felt confident defending. The opposition, however, came out swinging. They smashed 13 runs in the first over and 7 in the second, as if they were trying to finish the chase before the tea break. But our bowlers soon found their rhythm and applied some much-needed brakes to the chaos. Our first breakthrough came in the seventh over at 43. The second wicket fell in the 12th over at 83, courtesy of Balaji, who then decided he quite liked this wicket-taking business and grabbed two more in the 14th over at 89 and 91. These were massive wickets and gave us real hope. But after that burst, wickets became rarer than a fielder who doesn’t claim the sun was in his eyes. We picked up our fifth wicket in the 19th over at 123—and that was, unfortunately, the end of the celebrations. Their last pair dug in deep, with one batter scoring 120 and the other 42, guiding them home in 37.4 overs. Everyone played well, but we just couldn’t contain the opposition when it mattered. The three dropped catches hurt us badly—they weren’t just chances, they were plot twists. Add in the boundaries we let slip through, and the match slowly drifted away. With tighter fielding and those catches held, this game was ours. After all, as the old saying goes: catches win matches—and today, they definitely would have.
