Match Detail
Both captains wanted the same thing - we wanted to bat first, they wanted to bowl first. So the toss was politely skipped. And from the very first ball, it became obvious why they were so eager to bowl: the ball was swinging more than a drunk uncle at a wedding. Amit and Pinang opened the innings but could manage only 2 runs in the first two overs. The swing was outrageous, and Amit eventually fell in the fourth over, gifting a simple catch at mid-on. No panic though as our batting lineup is usually more reliable than British weather forecasts. In walked Pravesh, calm and composed, and immediately steadied the ship. He and Pinang stitched together a superb nearly 100-run partnership. Pinang was in classic form, scoring freely and soon raising his bat for his first half-century of the season. Pravesh played the perfect supporting role, quietly rotating strike and letting Pinang enjoy the spotlight. But as always, good things eventually end - Pinang departed after adding valuable 61 runs on the scoreboard. Next came Ankur, who continued the momentum with aggressive stroke play. With Pravesh at the other end, he raced towards his own milestone. Pravesh contributed another valuable 29 runs before being bowled after a 30-run partnership. Swaroop joined Ankur, and the pair kept the scoreboard ticking. Ankur soon reached his maiden half-century for the club before falling at 53. Rasheed then partnered Swaroop for a solid 40-run stand. Swaroop was unlucky to miss out on a fifty, dismissed for 43 in the 34th over. Skipper Manoj arrived for the final touches, making the most of the few balls left. We finished at 256/5, an excellent total in this short 35 overs format. Rohit and Ritesh opened the bowling brilliantly. Rohit removed one opener in the third over, and Ritesh knocked over the other in the very next. With both openers gone early, we expected the opposition to slow down, but they had other ideas. They counterattacked, finding boundaries before our bowlers tightened up and dragged the run rate back down. The required rate kept climbing steadily, but wickets refused to fall. One batsman was dropped four times! Three of them si simple they should have come with a gift ribbon. Add a missed stumping, and he seemed to have more lives than a cat. Naturally, he made 125 runs, because cricket gods were with him today. Their partnership ballooned to 196 runs, but with the required rate soaring past 15 per over, the game was fully in our control. Skipper tried a few overs from non-regular bowlers, and one went for 23, a charitable donation, but harmless in the bigger picture. Finally, in the 33rd over, Rohit broke the stand with a caught-and-bowled. In the next over, the lucky batsman’s fortune ran out when Pravesh beat him in the flight. The batsman had charged down the pitch, missed the swing completely, and Pinang completed a sharp stumping. Ritesh cleaned up the fifth batsman on the penultimate ball, followed by a dot to finish the innings. The opposition ended at 219/5, giving us a 37-run victory. Our batsmen set the tone with a commanding total, putting the opposition under pressure from the start. Despite the comedy of dropped catches, the game remained firmly in our control throughout. A strong, confident, and thoroughly deserved win.
